Not the only gays in the village.
Marjie Cardwell, 10th March 2005
Sydney art collective, Ethel Yarwood Enterprises was responsible for the ‘Daffyd’ entry in the 2005 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on Saturday March 5th. The ‘gag’ involved the parade participants walking along the parade route at 5-10 minute intervals with a sign reading ‘I’m the only gay in the village’ and dressed as Daffyd in black shorts, red sleeveless Tshirt and chain. All the participants then met up and walked together in the parade proper under the banner ‘We’re NOT the only gays in the village’. Each also carried a sign with the postcode of the place they lived when they though they were the only gay in the village.
Australian journalist Steve Dow wrote the following in the Mardi Gras official programme:
“Daffyd Thomas, committed homosexualist from queer cult TV hit Little Britain, has inspired here a virtual army of blond-topped, red-singleted sign carriers in tight leather shorts who are all determined that they are the only gays in this village ... The good folk at Newtown-based Ethel Yarwood Enterprises, a 15-year-old collective "founded on the philosophy of disposable art", say many of us, at some time in our lives, feel isolated and lonely, thinking we are the only gay person in the world. Finding your tribe is a great support network. Now, bring on the Daffyds. And remember: "You're not gay at all you're probably just a little bit poofy." Sue-Ellen Cox is the artistic director.”
As the photos from Lance Aperture of Ethel Yarwood Enterprises show, the ‘Daffyds’ really went to town and look like they had a fantastic time to boot!
